What is Amazon Q?

Amazon Q is a generative AI-powered assistant designed to help users at work. It can answer questions, generate content, take actions, and provide summaries, all tailored to specific business needs and data. It integrates with various data repositories and tools, offering personalized and secure assistance based on the user's role and permissions, ultimately aiming to boost productivity and streamline workflows.

How do I use Amazon Q CLI?

  • macOS: Download the .dmg installer, drag it into the Applications folder, run it, and enable shell integrations for completion and inline suggestions.
  • Linux:
    • Ubuntu/Debian: Use the .deb installer via wget and dpkg
    • AppImage: Make it executable (chmod +x), then run directly
  • Homebrew (macOS): Install via:

    brew install --cask amazon-q

Authenticate

In order to access Amazon Q, Authentication is the very first step to move forward.

  1. Run:

    q login
  2. Choose either Builder ID or IAM Identity Center for authentication.
  3. You'll be given a URL and verification code—open the URL, enter the code, and grant access.

Once authenticated, you're ready to go!

Issue I faced after installing Amazon-Q on my Mac

I faced command not found error when I run q login after installing with brew. I learned that I should run “Amazon Q” in Applications. You will see popup like below when you run “Amazon Q”

Core Features of Amazon Q CLI

1. Interactive Chat

Engage with Amazon Q directly in your terminal:

q chat

Inside the chat, ask things like:

  • “Do I have any EC2 instances running in us-east-1?”
  • “List my S3 buckets in us-east-1”

To exit the chat, type /quit or press Ctrl + D

2. Autocomplete & Inline Suggestions

  • Autocomplete Dropdown: As you type, a graphical suggestions menu appears to the right. Use arrow keys, then Tab or Enter to select.
  • Inline Suggestions: Ghost text appears as you type. Press Tab or the right arrow to accept, or keep typing to ignore.

You can manage these features:

# Autocomplete
q settings autocomplete.disable false # or true

# Inline suggestions
q inline enable # or disable
q inline status

3. Generating Commands through Natural Language

Amazon Q can convert natural language into shell commands:

q translate

For example: “Create a new S3 bucket named ‘my-sample-bucket’ in us-west-2.” This is especially helpful when you’re unsure of the exact syntax.

4. Contextual and AI-Powered Assistance

Amazon Q provides smart suggestions by understanding your local context—your code, history, environment, and even AWS resources.

5. Managing Settings

Access or modify settings via:

q settings # opens GUI
q settings all # list settings
q settings all -f json-pretty
q settings chat.defaultAgent [agent name]

Use q [COMMAND] --help for any command’s detailed options.

Sample Workflow (macOS or Linux)

  1. Install:

brew install --cask amazon-q # on macOS # or use .deb/AppImage on Linux
  2. Authenticate:

    q login

  3. Start a chat session:

    q chat

  4. Try a natural language prompt:

“Create a Python script to list all running EC2 instances.”
