Disconnect your RDP session when the screen saver activates on Windows 11

Option 1: Screen Saver "On resume, display logon screen" (Simplest)

This locks the session but doesn't fully disconnect it. However, combined with an RDP session timeout, it effectively disconnects idle sessions.

Right-click desktop → Personalize → Lock screen → Screen saver
Check "On resume, display logon screen"
Set your desired wait time


Option 2: Group Policy – Disconnect RDP session on idle/lock (Recommended)

This is the proper way to auto-disconnect RDP sessions:

Press Win + R → type gpedit.msc
 

Navigate to:
Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Remote Desktop Services → Remote Desktop Session Host → Session Time Limits
 

Enable and configure:

"Set time limit for disconnected sessions"
"Set time limit for idle Remote Desktop Services sessions" – set to your desired timeout (e.g., 15 minutes)
