Why is API documentation difficult while using PyCharm?

While PyCharm is a powerful IDE, some software engineers find the most challenging aspects to be its resource intensiveness (potentially leading to performance issues on less powerful machines), the sheer number of features and configurations, which can feel overwhelming initially and require a significant learning curve, and the occasional struggle with complex project configurations, particularly when dealing with intricate dependency management or unconventional build processes.

How do I make automated API Documentation with PyCharm?

You can create API documentation easily in PyCharm using several built-in tools and integrations. Here are a few approaches you can take:

1. Using Docstrings with PyCharm's Assistance

PyCharm supports and enhances standard Python docstrings, which tools like Sphinx, pdoc, or Doxygen can later convert into API documentation.

Steps:

  • Use docstring formats like Google style, reStructuredText (reST), or NumPy style.
  • PyCharm helps auto-generate and complete docstrings. Just type """ after a function or class, and it will offer a template.

Example (Google Style):

def add(a: int, b: int) -> int:
    """
    Add two numbers.

    Args:
        a (int): First number.
        b (int): Second number.

    Returns:
        int: Sum of a and b.
    """
    return a + b

2. Integrating Sphinx with PyCharm

Sphinx is a powerful documentation generator that can produce HTML, PDF, and other formats.

Steps to use:

  1. Install Sphinx:

    pip install sphinx

  2. In PyCharm:
    • Go to Terminal and run:

      sphinx-quickstart

    • Follow the prompts to create a documentation source directory.
  3. Use autodoc to extract docstrings:
    • Edit conf.py:

      extensions = ['sphinx.ext.autodoc']

    • In index.rst or another .rst file:

      .. automodule:: your_module
          :members:

  4. Build the docs:

    make html

PyCharm will detect .rst files and assist with syntax and previews.

3. Using pdoc

pdoc is a lightweight alternative that generates clean and modern documentation directly from your codebase.

Install and use:

pip install pdoc
pdoc your_module.py -o docs/

This works well for simpler projects and can be run from PyCharm's terminal.

4. Using Plugins (Optional)

There are plugins in PyCharm's marketplace that can assist with Markdown rendering, reStructuredText, and Sphinx workflows, such as:

  • reStructuredText Support
  • Markdown Navigator
  • DocString Generator

Install via Preferences > Plugins.
